Sharon Springs Free Library is looking for a collaborative, service-oriented Assistant Library Director

Candidate will work with Interim Library Director to learn daily operations, manage support staff, and strengthen the library’s role in the community. Potential for promotion to Library Director following successful review period. The library is open 34 hours (Monday - Saturday). Opportunity to work Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday (21 work hours). Hourly wage range is $18.00 to $20.00 per hour. Required qualifications:

  • Associates Degree or comparable work experience
  • Digital literacy and computer skills
  • Effective communication and strong interpersonal skills (written and verbal)
  • Ability to interact with diverse community

Description of duties:

  1. Patron Services
  • Ensure that all staff provide kind service and treat all patrons with equal respect.
  • Assist patrons in locating information
  • Assist with and process patron requests for materials from other sources
  • Check books and other materials out/in and shelve books and materials accurately
  • Ensure the Library is neat and orderly
  • Maintain a quiet, pleasant atmosphere which permits patrons to use the Library facilities without interference
  1. Administrative Tasks
    1. Library Management
      • Oversee routine Library daily business
      • Organize and/or administer adult and youth programs
      • Oversee maintenance and operation of electronic equipment
      • Monitor use of all electronic equipment
      • Manage and monitor use of the Community Room
      • Interact with other building offices
      • Determine and communicate emergency closures and/or temporary schedule changes
      • Respond to local/state/federal requirements in cases of emergencies
    2. Communication/Correspondence
      • Collect and sort mail
      • Take action on communication within scope of responsibility
      • Refer communications to appropriate Board members for action or coordination if necessary
      • Write weekly 'Library News' column for local media
      • Write monthly Director’s Reports
      • Prepare news releases as needed
      • Communicate MVLS/State notices to the Board
      • Post information regarding hours, programs, etc. (physically and virtually)
      • Process Overdue Reports
    1. Material and Shelf Management
      • Order and process all library materials according to Board guidelines and budget allowances
      • Select and process MVLS Rotating Collections
      • Supervise processing system circulation bins
      • Supervise “weeding” of collections
      • Provide for repair or replacement of books, as needed
    1. Record Keeping
      • Keep records as needed for monthly/annual reports
      • Keep records to fulfill any grant requirements
      • Keep records of daily statistics as needed
      • Keep time sheets required by Personnel Policy
    2. Filing System
      • Maintain files necessary to routine operation of the Library
      • Maintain official Policy and Procedure Manuals
    3. Reports
      • Prepare New York State Annual Report
      • Prepare annual report to the Board of Trustees
      • Prepare monthly director report
      • Prepare reports as required by NYS for grants, special programs and as requested by the Board of Trustees
    4. Supervision of Personnel
      • Train and supervise library and cleaning staff
      • Recruit, train and supervise volunteers as needed
      • Ensure all employees and volunteers present an appropriate professional appearance when on duty
